Cost-utility analysis of memantine in Alzheimer’s Disease in Brazil

Accelerated population aging has led to a progressive increase in dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). The study’s objective was perform cost-utility analysis on the use of memantine severe stage AD Brazil compared no specific pharmacological treatment from perspective Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). A Markov model designed simulate progression through five finite stages health that considered cognitive function and time horizon years. Progression probabilities were derived clinical trials population-based studies. Direct costs included hospitalization, medical consultation, additional medications, as well laboratory tests. measures for Quality Adjusted Life Year (QALY) international literature. Costs benefits discounted by 5%. Compared treatment, associated with gains QALY costs. showed resulted gain 0.00308 over simulated 5 years an R$351.50 per patient already values, resulting incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) R$114,123.38 QALY. cost effect variables under most uncertainty. Although represents QALY, its ICER is high context considering small limited benefit time.
